Looking at designing with ICFs?
Download our ICFMA Design Guide for Multi-Storey Buildings.
The information presented within the guide has been collected from a cross-section of industry professionals who are dedicated to the construction of high-performance buildings that employ insulating concrete form (ICF) technology. This effort is only intended to pass along a pool of general knowledge that can assist in the design of ICF/Concrete buildings without endorsing any one ICF brand.

Virtually any home or building can be built with ICFs . However, designing your building with your chosen ICF system in mind will usually result in a far more "ICF friendly" design and an efficient and cost-effective build.
An "ICF Friendly" building design has two general characteristics:
1. It will incorporate (whenever possible) wall dimensions and opening placements that require a minimum of cutting the ICF blocks. In general, cutting ICF blocks adds time, and often waste, to the build.
2. It will also specify a rebar pattern that has a horizontal rebar distance equal to the height of the ICF block. This means that the horizontal reinforcement bars can be easily snapped into place into the rebar holders provided by the ICF blocks themselves.
All ICFMA members provide design resources to help you create efficient, attractive and ICF friendly building designs. Please refer to the on-line Technical Libraries of our ICFMA members to access these resources.
Here is a listing of design resources typically offered by ICFMA members:
- Hardcopy and on-line Design Manuals
- Prescriptive Engineering
- CAD Details and Sections
- Estimating Resources
- Specification Documents
- Access to Technical Advisors for advice and technical support
